Dr. Ruth Anyango Aura-Odhiambo is a Founding Partner and Lead Consultant at Odhiambo & Odhiambo Advocates, bringing over 32 years of distinguished experience in legal practice, academia, and policy reform. She is recognized across Kenya and the region for her pioneering work in international human rights law, gender justice, commercial law, and governance reform, as well as her ability to bridge rigorous scholarship with transformative advocacy.
Dr. Aura-Odhiambo holds a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) in International Law from the University of Pretoria, an LL.M from the University of Zimbabwe, a Master in Policy Studies from the University of Fort Hare & University of Zimbabwe, and an LL.B from the University of Nairobi.
A former Dean of the Faculty of Law at Egerton University and Chairperson of FIDA–Kenya, Dr. Aura-Odhiambo has shaped Kenya’s legal landscape through leadership in gender equality, human rights, and institutional transformation. Her stewardship at FIDA–Kenya saw major advances in gender-responsive legislation, access-to-justice programmes, and the integration of women’s rights into national policy frameworks.
She has served as a Member of the National Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, where she chairs the Data and Knowledge Management thematic area, steering the creation of evidence-based frameworks for prevention, accountability, and policy coherence.
Her consultancy and advisory work spans the African Union, International Development Law Organization (IDLO), and national and county governments leading projects on law reform, devolution, environmental governance, and institutional capacity building. Her expertise in legal audits, governance frameworks, and data governance continues to shape institutional capacity-building and evidence-driven reform across Africa.
Dr. Aura-Odhiambo’s research in gender, climate justice, and constitutional governance continues to influence national and regional policy discourse. She has authored, edited, and reviewed numerous legal and policy instruments, curriculum frameworks, and academic publications that advance a rights-based approach to development and justice.
A mentor and thought leader, she supervises postgraduate research and advises governments and institutions on strengthening rule of law, ethical governance, and gender mainstreaming in policy implementation.
Dr. Ruth Aura-Odhiambo has guided numerous litigation and mediation processes, emphasizing negotiated settlements in family, matrimonial, and community land disputes. She frequently serves as lead mediator and advisor in cases involving gender-based violence, inheritance, and intergenerational property rights.
Her approach blends constitutional principles with restorative justice and participatory dialogue, ensuring that mediation outcomes respect both human rights and cultural legitimacy.
Dr. Ruth Aura-Odhiambo’s environmental law practice integrates legal, policy, and research expertise on climate justice, sustainability, and governance. She has advised on environmental policy formulation, biodiversity frameworks, forest governance, and community land management.
She has consulted for clients in matters arising under the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) and the Climate Change Act, and participated in international, regional and national conferences, processes, research and policy formulation teams linking International, Regional and Kenya’s environmental commitments to global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Her work advances ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) accountability and the recognition of women’s environmental rights as a justice imperative.
Dr. Aura-Odhiambo has extensive experience in land, rates, and conveyancing law. She advises clients on acquisition, development, and transfer of property, conducts legal due diligence and compliance audits, and represents communities and institutions in land adjudication and titling processes.
She has participated in land policy reform and the implementation of the National Land Policy (Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2009), with particular focus on gender equity in land ownership and customary tenure recognition.
Dr. Aura-Odhiambo has argued and advised in landmark matters advancing gender equality, matrimonial property rights, environmental justice, and constitutional interpretation.
She has been in continuous legal practice since 1993 and, as Managing Partner and Lead Consultant at Odhiambo & Odhiambo Advocates, has argued, directed, and advised counsel in a wide range of substantive proceedings before the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court of Kenya, as well as in matters engaging regional and international human-rights law.
A pioneer in integrating traditional dispute resolution (TDR) within constitutional frameworks, Dr. Ruth Aura-Odhiambo has worked with communities, county governments, and policy institutions to harmonize customary justice with statutory law and human rights standards.
Her research and practice underscore the value of indigenous justice systems in enhancing access to justice, cultural identity, and social cohesion, particularly for women and marginalized groups.
Dr. Ruth Aura-Odhiambo has provided advisory and advocacy services on marriage laws, family institutions, and matrimonial property regimes. She was a key contributor to Kenya’s Marriage Act (2014) and Matrimonial Property Act (2013), embedding equality and international human-rights principles into national legislation.
She continues to advise on inter-jurisdictional marriages, certification of no impediment, registration and recognition of foreign marriages, and matrimonial property rights in Kenya and abroad.
Dr. Ruth Aura-Odhiambo advises individuals, families, and corporate clients on immigration, residency, and citizenship matters. Her work includes compliance advisory for expatriate employment, work permits, and cross-border investments, ensuring alignment with Kenya’s immigration laws and human-rights commitments.
Appointed in 2025 to the National Technical Working Group on GBV and Femicide, she chairs the Data and Knowledge Management pillar, developing integrated frameworks for policy coordination, accountability, and national GBV/Femicide data infrastructure.
As Chairperson of FIDA–Kenya (2012–2016) and earlier as Senior Legal Counsel, she guided institutional strategies, rapid-response mechanisms, and advocacy before UN human rights mechanisms (CEDAW, CSW), embedding gender equality into Kenya’s justice and policy structures.
Founder and Director of the Faculty of Law Legal Aid Programme (FOLLAP) at Egerton University—Kenya’s leading university-based legal aid and clinical education model. Under her leadership, FOLLAP has trained hundreds of advocates, hosted four national Access to Justice Conferences, and established structured pro bono, policy dialogue, and community outreach systems linking academia and practice.
Since 2021, she has served on the Board of the National Legal Aid Service, shaping accreditation standards, performance frameworks, and monitoring systems for Kenya’s national legal aid infrastructure.
Principal drafter of key legal frameworks including the National Action Plan on Legal Aid (2017), AU Gender Action Plan (GAP) Model Legislative and Policy Framework on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (2017), and county legislation on Gender Equality, Public Participation, and Urban Agriculture.
As Dean, Faculty of Law, Egerton University (2019–2025), she oversaw accreditation, curricular reform, and the proposed establishment of Kenya’s first regional LL.M Programme in Human Rights and Governance. She also founded the Egerton Law Journal and supervises postgraduate research across Africa, examining doctoral theses in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.
She has consulted for multilateral institutions including the African Union, IDLO, UNFPA, ARD, AU-CIEFFA, A.C.O.R.D Action Aid and Everywoman on education, gender, African Women land ownership, women and human rights, climate justice, and governance frameworks, developing multi-country instruments adopted by regional and national actors.
Dr. Ruth Aura-Odhiambo trains judges, advocates, and law students on gender justice, ethics, and access to justice. She has addressed judicial conferences including the Alternative Justice Systems Conference (2024) and Employment and Labour Relations Court Annual Conference, and supported the Judiciary’s Gender and Sexual Harassment Policies.
Dr. Ruth Aura-Odhiambo has published widely on gender, human rights, devolution, and environmental law. Her scholarship is grounded in public service—bridging research, legal reform, and community empowerment.
Dr. Aura-Odhiambo’s scholarship directly informs Kenya’s national legal aid systems, county SGBV legislation, and continental gender and education frameworks. Her work has been cited in judicial reasoning, bar training, and UN-AU policy processes, translating theory into institutional transformation.
